African jewelry is as variegated as the African people themselves. Armed perhaps with the richest natural resources in the world; the African jeweler is constrained by only his imagination and in certain special cases by tribal tradition and superstition. Palm leaves, leather, eggshells, ivory, bronze, brass, silver, copper, gold, animal bones, glass, semi and precious stones and most recently plastic were all utilized for aesthetic adornment purposes. Beaded necklaces served for some groups as a sign of tribal identification. For others, beads were a sign of wealth and power. Beads that were perceived to be valuable were heavily traded and used as currency. Let us not forget the factor of vanity, which also comes into play. Our popular necklace found in Western Africa was fashioned after the traditional coconut disc necklace. This version features colorful, plastic well shaped disc sections that make for excellent fashion accessories. See matching earrings below!
