From the country of Nigerian comes a fertility figure of a queen mother and her child. This statue has served as a symbol of inspiration to mothers to be and as a symbol of tribal pride. It was passed down from generation to generation in private ownership. It was awarded to or commissioned by an artist for an elder of the past who was praised for her status of being an exemplary mother figure who was held in high esteem by the community. This wooden selection was carved with great care which is evidenced by the detailing. The attributes that the ideal woman must have in the eyes of the Nigerians, full pronounce breast, large strong legs and thighs are apparent in this carving. Lavish polychrome of yellow, green, red, white and blue are not often found thusly symbolizing the importance and richness of the figure. Through many, many years of handling and exposure to the elements signs of wear appear throughout the figure but the beauty of this privileged piece and the authenticity can not to be denied.
