Every self respecting Namji household has at least one standard ceremonial cup and some if they are fortunate have a pair. When the occasion arises, tribal or private, the cups are brought forth, the libations poured and passed around. The liquid might be infused with magical herbs and potions and ingested for medicinal or spiritual benefit. Quite often and more simply the vessels are introduced during celebratory occasions such as weddings, filled with wine and shared by important family members.
Fashioned from a rich hardwood these objects are fashioned to resemble the male and female Namji founding ancestors. The two receptacles offered display classic Namji sculptural characteristics; large circular eyes, supernatural ears, fiber banded necks, square shoulders and pronounce hands and feet.
When the Namji of Cameroon pour substances into the belly cavity of the figurative vessel they believe that the ancestors will bless their event or empower the medicine when in need of healing.
