We are pleased to bring you from the renown collector and African art dealer Ladislas Segy, founder of the world famous Segy Gallery in New York, a collection of authentic Ashanti goldweights. Mr. Segy is author of such noted African art reference books as "African Sculpture Speaks and The Masks of Black Africa".
This offering is sponsered by Mr.& Mrs. Paul Calfayan. Each goldweight was purchased in 1979 and were at least 20 years old at that time.
This well detailed goldweight selection was simply defined as "Fish with Double Headed Snake" by the Segy Gallery in 1979. Sunfish, Sawfish, Catfish, Mudfish and numerous other varieties of fish were often reproduced as goldweights. Some of these fish were sacred in certain Ashanti states and could not be eaten. The fish and the snake are very well detailed with clear markings.
