The people that occupy the North West region of Cameroon are known as the Oku. They reside in hillside dwellings located 2 - 4000 feet above sea level. The area has a lot of clean water sources and the climate is temperate throughout the year. Lake Oku and Mount Oku are two key geographical points with Mount Oku being the largest remaining patch of mountain forest in West Africa, and the highest in altitude. Various animals and rare plant species inhabit this area. Despite the forestry there is a shortage of arable land. The Oku are forced to farm on steep hillsides and only plant enough for the tending family to eat. Beans, corn and potatoes are a staple.
In Cameroon the Oku are well respected as superior carvers. Many still employ low-tech carving traditions passed down from forefathers by using homemade chisels and wooden mallets. These seasoned craftsmen are often called upon to create high grade art for royalty but are also relied upon to supply the Oku with important utilitarian objects. During certain phases of their agricultural endeavors the farmers utilize medium sized wooden baskets as offered here, to hold needed supplies such as a hoe, a water gourd and a smaller basket for crushed grain. These baskets are carried on their backs and supported by thick fiber cords. Our Oku basket has been used and shows appropriate signs of wear.
