African Ostrich Shell Necklace

African jewelry is as variegated as the African people themselves. Armed perhaps with the richest natural resources in the world; the African jeweler is constrained by only his imagination and in certain special cases by tribal tradition and superstition. Palm leaves, leather, eggshells, ivory, bronze, brass, silver, copper, gold, animal bones, glass, semi and precious stones were all utilized for aesthetic adornment purposes. Beaded necklaces served for some groups as a sign of tribal identification. The necklace on display was crafted from the eggshells of the largest bird on earth: the Ostrich. Please note that the Ostrich is not an endangered species. There are over 2 million of them in the world. In the past the ancient Egyptians domesticated them and used then to pull carts. They also were saddled and ridden much as one would ride a horse. Ostrich feathers were covented in Egypt and reserved for use only by Pharoahs and other elite Egyptians. Ostrich eggs are eaten worldwide. Perhaps this is related to the fact that once fully grown Ostriches have one of the most advanced immune systems know to man. Whatever the case they are very popular and skilled African craftsmen have taken their eggshells and hand crafted them into smallish disc shapes to fashion a very sturdy attractive necklace that is enjoyed.
