Click Here for New Arrivals! The Bamoun people of Cameroon can claim fame to some of the finest artwork crafted in Africa. Their repertoire is vast. Their talents seem to be focused upon creating the most elaborate and decorative objects possible. From woodworking to bronze casting their highly embellished stylizing is enjoyed worldwide. The wine vessel featured above was hand crafted from a gourd that was grown on the Baobab tree. It is richly laced with cowry shells embedded in an attractive blackened mixture of wood ash. Four finely cast bronze figurines: three men, one bull, sit out from the gourd surface by 1/2 inch. The bovine is a Bamoun symbol of prosperity and virility. The three men also represent prosperity. One is carrying livestock another is smoking and the last is drinking. These are all pleasures reserved for royalty and the well off. The top plug features another brass figure of a man smoking from a long pipe. This figure stands 4 1/2 inches tall. The entire vessel exudes richness by the use of cowry shells and bronze, a semi precious metal. Royalty for their wines used gourds of this nature as decanters.
