The Senufo people live on the northern most border of the Ivory Coast and are spread across Burkina Faso and Mali. The Senufo people hold art in very high regard; with much of it crafted with the intent of fulfilling specific roles in Senufo social rituals, spiritual practice, utilitarian use and glorifying traditional figures. The Senufo artisans are famous for combining animal attributes and human facial qualities to create unique trademark masking forms. The mask on display is paraded during Poro society ceremonies for young initiates. Senufo signature, sleek antelope legs protrude from the lower portion of the beautifully blackened mask while long flattened curved horns depict the great power of the buffalo. The spirits of speed and strength are thought to transfer to the new sect members.
