African necklace: Snakes are conceptually important and are one of the most frequent themes of zoomorphic art . In Africa they are the subject of architectural motifs, masks, statues, and are found woven into textiles, fashioned into jewelry, featured on pottery, staffs and royal regalia. Serpents in general are perceived as powerful earth spirits but perceptions and related ideologies change from people to people. The snake bone necklaces on display are from the country of Nigeria, crafted by the Yoruba. Yoruba men associate snakes with the undeniable power of women. The men perform Gelede ceremonies to celebrate and to keep in good favor with the vital force of women. This force is both revered and feared. The Yoruba man believes that women nurture with love and can destroy with witchcraft and that certain women can transform into snakes! Our necklaces are constructed from the vertebrae of African garden snakes and strung on a heavy fiber cord.
