The 80,000 Suku reside in the Northern and Southern part of the Congo. They share their territory with the Yaka and the Lunda people. Their secret societies, political institutions and cultural traditions mirror that of the Yaka. Artistically, Suku art consists of statuary and masks each displaying Yaka influences. The Suku hemba helmet mask is an atypical example of this meld of cultural influence. The classic Suku enlarged somewhat plain facial attributes such as the exaggerated whiten head, oversized triangular nose and blued coffee bead shaped eyes are evident. These features are all set under an elaborate Yaka influenced elaborate, conical, blue and white superstructure. The mask is carved from a cylinder of hard wood and draped with a shoulder full of flowing raffia fibers. The towering blue and white structure is fastened to the facial mask by a heavy fiber netting. This type of mask represents the deceased community of chiefs. The mask appears during rites of passages, initiations and funerals and often on occasions where blessings of good fortunes are needed such as before hunting expeditions are to take place. This mask was acquired in Africa between 1981-1983. It is in absolute pristine condition. The raffia is original, the pigmentation is brilliant and the markings are all clear and concise.
