This instrument is one of the oldest forms of communication used in Africa . In the past, the drum was used to signal others from great distances, often in a network of drummers, relaying messages of urgency throughout the continent. To this day, drums still play a very important part in African life where they are called upon during various tribal rituals and celebrations.

The selection on display was crafted in East Africa where most of the people are of Bantu origin and speak Swahili. Their drums are usually covered in well aged leather or prime goat skin. This finely carved drum has a very, very tight drum top that produces melodic rhythms at the slightest touch! This piece is a welcome addition to any African theme décor but most importantly are the special sounds that it can produce at the hands of a willing musician.
