This offering is sponsered by Mr.& Mrs. Paul Calfayan. Each goldweight was purchased in 1979 and were at least 20 years old at that time. The regular price reflects the current market value. The on sale price reflects the generosity of the Calfayans. Authentication papers are included with each purchase, enjoy!

A well adorned ball handled Ashanti sword and a popular geometrical motif comprise this offering. The sword is known as the Akofena or State sword. This type of sword was often made of gold or thick gold foil. It was kept in a scabbard with a rams' head on it. The Akofena was the Akan symbol for heroism, valiant acts and gallantry. Akan warriors were among the bravest fighters in West Africa in the 18th and 19th century. It also serves as a sign of state authority, legality and the legitimized authority of the ruler. The proverb "The retiring great warrior always has a royal sword of rest" is associated with this selection.
