Some of the most remarkable works of art hail from the country of Cameroon. The three major ethnic groups: the Bamoun, Bamileke and Tikar create objects that are simply visually bedazzling. This time the Tikar, a community of about 300,000 have taken center stage with the Bull mask. The bull is considered to be a royal court animal; one that when used in art, makes a direct reference to the king. To the Tikar and other tribes of the region, the king and the bull share similar attributes, such as great power, tremendous strength and virility. On special occasions when the king would make a public appearence, this item would be displayed in his honor for all to see. Crafted from a very hard native wood, stylized to exude power and wealth, the Tikar Bull Mask has been bedecked with dozens of hand placed cowry shells (cowry shells are one of Africas' oldest forms of money) and speckled with several genuine African coins of the region to represent prosperity in the current times. All of which have been embedded into an attractive contrasting blackened mixture of wood dust. To further enhance its beauty, the Tikar artisan chose to include hand molded pieces of the semi precious metal bronze to fill the eye cavities. From the tips of each horn to the ends of every tooth, the Bull mask has been crafted with exacting detail and with regal richness that can only be described as captivating.
