Toma Game Spear: Circa 1960

The Toma people reside in the rainforest that border the countries of Guinea and Liberia. In Liberia the Toma are referred to as Loma. The Toma as a whole govern their entire social, political and spiritual behavior around the mandates of the Poro society. Among other duties, the Poro members are responsible for the initiation of young boys into manhood. One of the most important objects that a young man can obtain that announces his manhood and total acceptance as a viable member of the tribe is a spear. Hand forged and crafted from the finest materials, a good spear is held in high esteem for it's precision as a weapon and as a symbol of tribal pride. A hunter will keep his favored spear for the duration of his life. The item on display is a classic traditional small game hunting spear. One that was carried often as a favorite for its small size and deadly precision. The original age worn leather sheath conceals a 12 inch spear head that has a slight coat of rust. This type of weapon was perfect for producing short stabbing action. The entire wooden mid section of the spear has been tightly wrapped in 3 natural animal hide sections. One of which has retained the animal fur. Beneath the animal hide gripping is a 16 inch tapered metal shaft that has a flattened end point. The additional of this metal adds weight for force during attack and balance for accuracy. The spear when held has a good solid feel.
