Product Description

African jewelry is as varied as the African people themselves. Armed perhaps with the richest resources in the world. The African jeweler is constrained only by his imagination and in certain cases by tribal tradition. The reasons jewelry is worn is just as varied. Ears in general are pierced to enhance beauty, show tribal identity and to display wealth. For example Kirdi and Lobi women wear earrings to protect them from dangerous supernatural forces that can enter the body through the ear. Tuareg women adorn their lobes with earrings made from ‘the metal of the Prophet’ silver, that aids in protection. One traditional signature Tuareg ornament is that of a silver capped cylindrical amulet. This selection is usually accompanied by several others and placed along a necklace providing space between beads and other such adornments. Originally these silver amulets, heavily inscribed, would hold special organic materials inside that would give off long lasting pleasant scents such as rose petals or nutmeg or the piece would hold tiny scrolls of scripture that provided words of inspiration. Today the beautiful objects have been made into a pair of pure African silver earrings.

Crafted by jeweler Omar Ibrahim Dakoro of Niger.
