The Tuareg are considered to be the “Lords of the Desert.” They have traversed the Sahara, the largest desert in the world for centuries as traders and raiders. The Tuareg have Biblical reference where they are referred to as the Canaanites. They were also known as the “Blue or Purple people” in regards to the indigo blue clothing that was worn and subsequently rubbed off onto their skin. Tuareg objects that are considered art are highly functional items to the Tuareg. Noted for colorful leather works, silver amulets and weaponry most goods feature a small assortment of traditional and repetitive geometrical symbols. The Tuareg transfer a blend of Islamic, Christian and African animalism ideologies into talismanic motifs. The patterns serve to protect the nomads through the tribulations of desert life. The vessel on display has blackened etchings from the artist use of the hot knife technique. The vessel was craved from a single piece of wood and used ceremoniously.
