Tuareg Shinglet Choker

All desert people who can afford to do so wear silver. Silver is perceived as ‘the pure metal blessed by the Prophet.’ Silver jewelry possession is important to the Tuareg of the Saharan. It is an indicator of family wealth, position and origin. The highly touted Tuareg smiths create a wide array of jewelry objects that all tie together by the use of traditional Berber markings. These etchings are clean cut, concise, geometrical and are repeated over and over again in jewelry, embroidery and leather workings. The markings are ancient blessing of good fortune and symbols of protection for the wearer. However sophisticated or stylized or modern the piece, the traditional markings will be apparent, as with the silver choker on display.

The 5 silver geometrical shapes have been hand cut and hand engraved with the traditional Tuareg motifs. Each silver shingle features the tedious etchings which are highlighted by 5 precisely cut and placed horizontal ebony strips. Round silver balls have been spaced in between. The entire piece is exceptionally well crafted by a Tuareg master smith.
