We are pleased to bring you from the renown collector and African art dealer Ladislas Segy, founder of the world famous Segy Gallery in New York, a collection of authentic Ashanti gold weights. Mr. Segy is author of such noted African art reference books as "African Sculpture Speaks and The Masks of Black Africa".
This offering is sponsered by Mr.& Mrs. Paul Calfayan. Each goldweight was purchased in 1979 and were at least 20 years old at that time.
Ashanti goldweights replicate not only daily village activity and common practice but often bring to life proverbial sayings. The Hornbill and Snake represent a popular tale of patience: According to legend, the hornbill owed the snake but did not take the debt seriously because it figured that it could always fly away from the snake if persued. The snake being patient, waited until one day the hornbill was careless and killed it. This selection offers two such illustrations.
