Shango is the the god of thunder and the ancestor of the Yoruba people of Nigeria. He is the son of Yemaja the mother goddess and protector of birth. As the legendary fourth king of the ancient kingdom of Oyo, Shango's rule was marked by capricious use of power. The orisha Shango is portrayed with a double axe on his head (the symbol of thunder.) In one account regarding the oshe shango, the female figure who balances the ax, the sign of Shango's power is equated with the "caprice and creative experience of human sexuality." All of the Shangos have been used in ritual practice. Signs of wear are evident.
The unusual left blackened selection where the figure sits atop the axe measures 14 1/2 inches tall x 8 inches wide. The age has been determined at over 50 years.
The solid, well detailed center selection measures 15 inches long x 4 inches wide. The age has been determined at over 30 years.
The light wood toned Shango on the right measures 15 inches long x 3 inches wide. The age has been determined at over 30 years.
