The word Sande means “the earth.” In the word Azande it means “the people who possess much land.” This relates to their history as conquering warriors who were famous for their iron throwing knives. Neighboring closely to the Mangbetu they occupy the northern most Savannah and forested regions of the Congo. The Zande do not craft royal court regalia rather their totems are reserved for use within the Mani secret society. Statuary ranging in height from 3-10 inches are known as ‘yanda.’ They are typically carved from wood but can be found in clay. The sculptures phallic-like in form and are exemplified by simplistic features. The pronounce head is circular with a face of two flat planes meeting at a medial ridge. The legs are stunted, stubby, zig zag or highly stylized. The majority of the yandas are armless. These figures are believed to have supernatural powers and are rubbed and colored with magical substances such as kaolin. Some older figures are adorned with meaningful scarification and beads. This selection was crafted in the mid 20th century.
