The Zaramo are an east central Bantu peoples whose ancestors moved eastward into modern day Tanzania from the mountainous Luguru and Kutu areas around the turn of the 18th century. Most of the leaders in Zaramo communities were men, but on occasion they could be women. In general religion among the Zaramo is a household concern. Every family is responsible for appeasing its ancestral spirits but in unison, the Zaramo Believe in a supreme God, Mulungu. As with every other African people the continuation of life and the perceived preparation for it among the young was the primary tribal concern.

The form of this Zaramo fertility figure is reduced to an abstract essence. Zaramo female initiates keep such figures during their period of seclusion and coming out ceremonies. While the initiate is separated from the rest of the community, the fertility figure becomes her only companion. After the ceremony, the young woman hangs the 'mwana biti' around her neck or holds it in her hand. If the woman cannot have children, she will use the doll as a surrogate child unitil a real one is conceived. Our selection has been crafted from a beautiful hard wood, features a semi-glossy finish from handling and has been used.
