Zulu Beer Basket: 15 inch

Zulu Basket: Traditionally Zulu women weave the baskets using age old, time honored methods that are passed on from mother to child. It can take up to six weeks of dedicated labor to create one piece. Ilala palm, is the preferred natural source material used for the weaving, and grows along the North-Eastern Coast of Kwa-Zulu (Place of Heaven) Natal Province. Once the leaf is cut and dried it is prepared for weaving in either its natural cream color or dyed. All basket colors are natural and obtained from boiling roots, leaves, berries and bark of indigenous flora. The patterns vary from decorative bands to intricate, triangles, diamonds, zig-zags, triangles and checkerboard motifs. These famous baskets come in three main varieties: herb baskets, beer baskets and family baskets. The beer basket or "Uhkamba" baskets are made to hold fluids and have a very tight weave. They are often given as treasured wedding presents. This basket has been expertly crafted and enjoys museum quality status. This purchase includes the signed name of the Zulu lady who created the basket. Your purchase will help her maintain her independence.
