Descendants of the Nguni peoples of southeast Africa, the Zulu trace their history back to the 14th and 15th centuries when they migrated southward and settled into modern day South Africa. During the 1800's under Chief Shaka, the Zulu established themselves as a very powerful people and were feared throughout southern Africa. Today most of the Zulu population lives in a 10,000 square mile Zululand reserve along the Indian Ocean. Once self sufficient they must now rely on employment outside of their reserve in nearby towns to survive. This is not an ideal situation to be in!
Zulu artistry has been somewhat been over shadowed by their unprecedented proclivity in the creation of weaponry, shields, clubs and spears. Nevertheless their basketry, the famous Zulu baskets fashioned by the Zulu women, are world renown and favorites of collectors everywhere.
Authentic Africa is pleased to be able to offer our clients the highest 'Museum' grade Zulu baskets possible. They are the finest that South Africa has to offer. Each basket comes with a full explanation of the baskets traditional use, the design pattern symbols, materials used and the name of the individual that has woven it!
We are equally proud to announce that the sales of these baskets, directly, self employ 148 (and counting) Zulu women and men. Thank you for helping a proud and deserving people regain their self worth and independence!
New Zulu baskets will arrive by Spring!
