Product Description

The BaKongo people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo are also known as the Wongo and Ba-Ndjembe. Their history and culture is deeply intertwined with the Kuba, Leele, Pende, Chokwe and Mbuun tribes. They consider themselves unified with the Kuba and Leele people. BaKongo art as with their culture, is very similar to their neighbors. They produce excellent textiles and a diverse group of utilitarian objects such as pipes, drums, small mask pendants, combs, knives and ceremonial cups. The pipe on display has been innovatively constructed from gourd, clay, copper braiding, copper studs and animal bone. The pipe is used by individuals during special occasions. It is functional but usage should be reserved for decorative purposes.
