This masks set features a BaSongye Mask:

The BaSongye of Southeast Zaire have local rulers, the Sultani Ya and an influential secret society, the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe. The most famous mask created by the Songye, the Kifwebe, is worn in connection with the secret society. The mask can be either male if a top head crest is present or if displaying a plain coiffure, female. The mask offered is a female mask. The face is surrounded by Songye signature linear etchings and highlighted by the classic Songye protruding mouth with the telltale Songye"X". Female masks essentially reflect positive forces and appear in dances held at night such as lunar ceremonies. The mask has the powerful capacity to heal by means of the supernatural force that is thought to be housed in the mask itself. This mask features a very beautiful feathery trim! Full of native bird plumage.

Dimensions: 7 inches long x 6 inches across. Measurement includes the feathering.

The second larger mask is from the Lele tribe:

Today the 250,000 members of the Kuba kingdom has subdivided into eighteen self sustaining tribes including the Bushoong, Ngeende, Kete, Lele, Binji, Dengese, Mbuun and Wongo. Each tribe pays an annual tribute to the Nyim, the king of the Bushoong. The 30,000 or so Kuba sub group called the Lele occupy the western region of the Kuba kingdom. Not much is really known about their tribal organization and spiritual practices. They do sustain themselves by hunting and by engaging in agricultural endeavors. They have a small array of specially designed prestigious masks reserved for important occasions. Most of the artwork such as the offering here on display, has been heavily influenced by other Kuba people mainly the Songye and Luba people as evidenced by the "X" that is the centerpiece of the coif. The mask on display is generally hung in a private home to represent a favored female ancestor. Dark brown, tan and reddish pigment has been applied to the face of these wooden masks.

Authentic African décor accent!

This makes for a wonderful African accent piece!
