Product Description

“Tabwa” translated means “tied up” denoting the condition of a slave. This moniker is quite appropriate considering the fact that the Tabwa were dominated by the neighboring Luba people and then later by the Europeans from Belgium. Despite their bondage and enslavement they were a strong people who were able to retain their cultural identity and beliefs. Africans in general have a penchant for transforming common everyday items into works of art. The cane or walking stick as it is known in Africa is used in a normal fashion to assist in walking. In the Congo, where the canes were crafted, the status or reputation of the canes' owner can be recognized by the degree of workmanship, intricacy of design and the adjoining symbolism that the cane features. The special stick on display features intense detailing and was given to a lady of high village status. The top grip is that of a carved 7 inch tall female in a classic Tabwa pose. Her hair extends downward with etched braiding and her stomach area is laced with tribal scarification. She was a role model for all women to follow as demonstrated by the large lizard carved in bas relief on the section that she is perched upon. The lizard is a symbol of reproduction and she was a mother to many. A smooth 5 inch shaft is posted over a Tabwa stylized motif with linear etchings covering the entire front and back. This is a wonderful hard wood selection that would look very nice on a stand but it is more than ready for use!
