Product Description

Three masks for the price of one !!!

Authentic Africa is pleased to partner with Etsy to offer handmade African accent masks.

You don't have to spend hundreds of dollars to show your appreciation for African Art. Maybe you are looking for something a little extra to highlight a mud cloth pillow, a little statue that sits on a table or maybe something to fill that nagging blank corner on the wall!

Our small masks are perfect! They are low cost but the best part is that they are Authentic! These items were not made for the trade. They have been gathered after actual use during public festivals!

The pair of masks on the sides are Lega:

The men and women in Lega culture enter their centuries-old Bwami society to learn skills and wisdom for life. All Lega art is created and linked to Bwami practices. The Bwami society has 7 major levels for males and 4 grades for females with several degrees within each all of which can take a lifetime to master. Statues and masks are important for the ceremonies, to the individuals who created them and to the ensuing owners. These are 2 perfect small masks that serve as replicas of the larger classic Lega tribal masks complete with lower rim raffia!

Authentic African accent pieces!

Dimensions: Both masks are basically 10 inches long, including the raffia x 3 inches wide.

The third larger mask is from the Lele tribe:

Today the 250,000 members of the Kuba kingdom has subdivided into eighteen self sustaining tribes including the Bushoong, Ngeende, Kete, Lele, Binji, Dengese, Mbuun and Wongo. Each tribe pays annual tribute to the Nyim, the king of the Bushoong. The 30,000 or so Kuba sub group called the Lele occupy the western region of the Kuba kingdom. Not much is really known about their tribal organization and spiritual practices. They do sustain themselves by hunting and by engaging in agricultural endeavors. They have a small array of specially designed prestigious masks reserved for important occasions. Most of the artwork such as the offering here on display, has been heavily influenced by other Kuba people mainly the Songye and Luba people as evidenced by the "X" that is the centerpiece of the coif. The mask on display is generally hung in a private home to represent a favored female ancestor.

Dimensions: 10 inches long x 5 1/2 inches wide.
