Product Description

3 masks for the price of one !!!

You don't have to spend hundreds of dollars to show your appreciation for African Art. Maybe you are looking for something a little extra to highlight a mud cloth pillow, a little statue that sits on a table or maybe something to fill that nagging blank corner on the wall!

Our small masks are perfect! They are low cost but the best part is that they are Authentic! These items were not made for the trade. They have been gathered after actual use during public festivals!

The center mask is BaLuba:

The BaLuba of the southern part of the Congo empire was founded in 1585. At its peak over 1 million people paid tribute to the Luba king. At the end of the 19th century the empire collapsed when the Belgian colonials took control. A secret society, the Bambudye, kept the memory of their great Luba empire alive and bonded the diverse populations together. Through this diversity, artistically speaking, a lot of stylistic variations were born. Traditionally masks were used during rituals and galas. In Africa virtually all cultures will pay homage to animals in one way or another, the Luba are no exceptions. Today such small animal masks are proudly displayed in private abodes and or often worn during large celebratory gatherings.

This makes for a wonderful African accent piece!

Dimensions: 9 inches long x 5 inches across

The two smaller masks are Lega:

The men and women in Lega culture enter their centuries-old Bwami society to learn skills and wisdom for life. All Lega art is created and linked to Bwami practices. The Bwami society has 7 major levels for males and 4 grades for females with several degrees within each all of which can take a lifetime to master. Statues and masks are important for the ceremonies, to the individuals who created them and to the ensuing owners. Carved from a light native wood and dusted with magical white kaolin powder the masks are properly adorned with flowing raffia!

Dimensions: 5 1/2 inches long x 3 1/4 inches across for larger of the two masks. The raffia extends the length to 110 inches.

This makes for a wonderful African accent combo!
