Product Description

Authentic Africa is pleased to offer handmade African accent masks.

Two masks for the price of one !!

You don't have to spend hundreds of dollars to show your appreciation for African Art. Maybe you are looking for something a little extra to highlight a mud cloth pillow, a little statue that sits on a table or maybe something to fill that nagging blank corner on the wall!

Our small masks are perfect! They are low cost but the best part is that they are Authentic! These items were not made for the trade. They have been gathered after actual use during public festivals!

This set includes a Hemba Mask:

About 90,000 Hemba people inhabit the right bank of the Lualaba River in southeast DRC. Their land is surrounded by hills and bordered by streams, rocks, and marshes. They recognize a creator god Vidiye Mukulu and a supreme being ShimuGabo. The Hemba offer prized tribal statuary that is coveted by collectors worldwide. Fortunately a few rare mask forms are just beginning to hit the market and gain recognition. Unfortunately much of their function and meaning remain obscure. The small Hemba mask offered here is beautifully adorned with a full lush native bird feathering. During celebrations of unity masks such as the one offered here are proudly displayed.

Dimensions: 7 inches long x 8 1/2 inches wide. This measurement includes the feathering.

This set includes a larger BaLuba Mask:

The BaLuba of the southern part of the Congo empire was founded in 1585. At its, peak over 1 million people paid tribute to the Luba king. At the end of the 19th century the empire collapsed when the Belgian colonials took control. A secret society the Bambudye, kept the memory of their great Luba empire alive and bonded the diverse populations together. Through this diversity, artistically speaking, a lot of stylistic variations were born. Traditionally masks were used during rituals. Today they are proudly displayed in private abodes and often worn during large celebratory gatherings. This mask features concise ridged grooves with beautiful exposed brown wood. This covering was used during large social gatherings and paid tribute to the diverse Luba nation.

This makes for a wonderful African accent piece.
