In the past, in the country of Chad on any given day you might see villagers with one or more of these bottles dangling from their waistbands. Filled with medicinal potion, liquids or ground matter, these ornate creations are yet another example of functional African art. The countrymen of Chad are well known throughout the continent for their profundity in metal casting and smelting techniques. These skills are put to use in the creation of these attractive brass vessels. Stylistically variegated, complimented by leather trims, plugs and straps they were personal items that were always kept close. Today they are valued traditional items from a time past.
