Product Description

Dolls have been associated with man since ancient times and have been found in archaeological sites throughout the world. In some cultures they were used as toys however their primary use has always been connected to the rituals of burial, fertility, initiation and marriage. In Africa dolls are made in various shapes, in a wide variety of materials for specific reasons. Dolls used in conjunction with magical practice for the sole purpose of gracing a woman with fertility are referred to as fertility dolls. The purpose again is generally the same but the actual design and accompanied paraphernalia varies from country to country. This selection is from the Congo, a region dominated by inhabitants whose way of life is dictated by supernatural entities and otherworldly spirit based faith systems. The doll has been dramatically adorned from head to toe and stands steadfast on a custom wooden base. Cowry shells have been embedded upon the front top of the head giving way to several lines of embedded colorful tiny beads that form strands of dangling strung small beads, medium sized beads, plastic flat rings, and wooden brown cylinders all ended at the tip by a single cowry shell, behind it. The brown wooden face is highlighted by six horizontal silver metal strips running across the cheeks and two circular silver metal strips that rim the eye sockets. The neck is ringed by beaded work and the upper chest area adorned with rows of cowry shells. A cascade of the bead string ensembles suspended from the neck area dangle freely draping the entire long pole-like torso which has encrusted small red, light blue, dark blue and white beading. One such strand features a large bivalve shell top. The bulbous waist region is further embellished with attractive cowries and two bivalve seashell tops. The well formed solid legs are fashioned in the same manner as the beaded torso. The feet have been correctly left bare. It is quite evident that much care has gone into the construction and decoration of this special doll that was brought to us from the Congo.
