The Dogon are among the oldest surviving African cultures despite the fact that throughout their existence more powerful neighbors have threatened them. For protection, until about 300 years ago the Dogon built their villages near or in sandstone cliffs. They have thusly been nicknamed the Hill, Cliff and Mountain people. The Dogon are believed to be of Egyptian descent. After living in Libya for a time, they settled in Mali, West Africa, bringing with them astronomy legends and theories of mankind’s creation, dating from before 3200 BC. Dogon mythology is known only by a small number of their priests and is a complex system of knowledge.
According to Dogon lore when a person dies their spirit ascends upward in a spiraling twisting form. The bronze alloy metal figures are representative of this belief. A male and female, tall and elongated, destined for the after life, stand on a wooden custom made base.
