Product Description

Ethiopia is the oldest independent nation in Africa. Landlocked between Kenya, Eritrea, Somalia, Sudan and Djibouti it covers an area a little less than twice the size of Texas. Ethiopia is home to a myriad of peoples with over 80 different spoken languages. The people that live along the coastal regions are generally nomadic and produce light and portable objects such as neck rests. Contrary to popular contemporary lore head rests are not and were not devices used to communicate with ancestors! The sole function of a head rest is to elevate the head to protect elaborate hair styles while sleeping. Neck rests are highly sought after collectibles and as a result many hastily carved reproductions are on the market today. Out of respect for our clientele the head rests that we offer are authentic and aged! The item above was carved by the Kaffa people of Ethiopia with the signature coned base. Hundreds of tiny multicolored old beads decorate the conical base. Large single cowry shells are wraped around the bottom rim. The pillow edging features single cowry shells dangling from a chain of older tan, orange and black beads. The wood of the pillow has a beautiful reddish leathery brown patina that naturally demonstrates the age of this prized selection.
