This Batik was hand drawn and signed by Mr. Kiwanuka. He is fast gaining recognition as the premier Batik artist in Kenya!
Batiks are produced in Kenya by brushing hot liquid wax onto a piece of cotton cloth in the desired pattern. The canvas is then dipped into a dye which adheres to all of the areas that are not covered by the wax. The wax is then removed and reapplied repeated for each color used. This is a tedious time consuming endeavor that yields exceptional art. Animals, village scenes, landscapes, seascapes and abstracts compose much of the subject matter. The colors are natural and brilliant! The underlying batik background has been enhanced by a colorful hand painted scene of two villagers "getting down" to the sound of tribal drums! This batik is heavy weight and in excellent condition for framing. It is also perfectly fine to hang as is.
