The Kongo people are a large ethnic group that reside in territories now know as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Angola and Zaire. They were extremely exploited by European slave traders. In the early 20th century, they became one of the most active ethnic groups in the efforts to decolonize Africa, helping to liberate the three nations to self governance. They now occupy influential positions in the politics, administration and business operations in the three countries they are most found in. During celebrations of unity masks such as the one offered here of fellow tribesmen, elders and ancestors are proudly displayed.
