One of the oldest, most traditionally common yet truly extraordinary use for bells in Africa is not for musical purpose rather for the summoning and waking of spiritual ancestors and mystical entities. From the onset of creation the bells would have gifted handlers. Throughout the entire process the bells would be given special attention and preparation for its specific function. Whether they are to be placed on a mask or a costume, used for a festive gala or during a serious judgmental tribal ritual these small tinkling objects are tasked with attracting supernatural forces.
Our 8 bells hail from various regions of the Congo representing a variety of tribes. Each was used ceremonially until they were retired. These bronze metal bells were collected during the early 80s and used for decades prior. The clappers are present and working and produce sound. Please refer to the photos for measurements.
