Product Description

Two masks for the price of one !!

You don't have to spend hundreds of dollars to show your appreciation for African Art. Maybe you are looking for something a little extra to highlight a mud cloth pillow, a little statue that sits on a table or maybe something to fill that nagging blank corner on the wall!

Our small masks are perfect! They are low cost but the best part is that they are Authentic! These items were not made for the trade. They have been gathered after actual use during public festivals!

This masks features a Luba tribe mask:

The BaLuba of the southern part of the Congo empire was founded in 1585. At its, peak over 1 million people paid tribute to the Luba king. At the end of the 19th century the empire collapsed when the Belgian colonials took control. A secret society the Bambudye, kept the memory of their great Luba empire alive and bonded the diverse populations together. Through this diversity, artistically speaking, a lot of stylistic variations were born. Traditionally masks were used during rituals and galas. In Africa virtually all cultures will pay homage to animals in one way or another, the Luba are no exceptions. Today such small animal masks are proudly displayed in private abodes and or often worn during large celebratory gatherings. The mask features green, black, mustard yellow and red pigment.

This makes for a wonderful African accent piece!

Dimensions: 12 long x 5 1/2 inches wide.

The second mask is from the Lwalwa people:

The Lwalwa people reside in the African countries of the Congo and in Angola in sections where the land is rich and fertile. The Lwalwa divide their territories into villages each of which are headed by a chief which surprising enough might be led by either a male or female! The chiefs actions are closely monitored by a powerful society, the "bangongo." The Lwalwa believe in a supreme being but only worship nature and spirits of the hunt. The Lwawla are famous for their masks and carvers are well compensated for. The classic smaller mask, in shades of brown, included in your set has a full bushy feathered trim from native birds.

Dimensions: 7 inches long x 8 inches across. The measurements include the feathering.
