Product Description

" Handwoven cloth is sometimes regarded as having a spiritual potential not found in manufactured fabric."

The handmaking skills required to create such high quality fabric has been passed down from one generation to the next for at least 700 years. Indigo production being one of the oldest industries in existence is found all across Africa with each people developing their own distinctive process and design. The traditional practice of gathering leaves, flowers and stems from the indigofera or lonchocarpus cyanescens plants are still used and ground together to make a pulp. The pulp is left in the sun for 2-3 days to dry. This serves as the base.

The Baule use a technique called "Ikat." It is a deeply complex process in which the threads are lined up on a loom by a weaver to form a pattern before being woven.

The selection offered here is a beautiful piece of genuine Baule tribe hand woven cloth. The selection offered here is authentic Baule hand woven cloth featuring peachy orange tan seams that separate sections of indigo blue and natural white tribal patterns all of which are highlighted by rectangular colorful bars of raised stitching that are interspersed throughout the cloth.

Older selections in general may include tiny rips in the seams, hand made repair work and staining. These are all normal characteristics of aged Baule textiles. This selection is in very good shape!
