" Handwoven cloth is sometimes regarded as having a spiritual potential not found in manufactured fabric."
The hand making skills required to create such high quality fabric has been passed down from one generation to the next for at least 700 years. Indigo production being one of the oldest industries in existence is found all across Africa with each people developing their own distinctive process and design. The traditional practice of gathering leaves, flowers and stems from the indigofera or lonchocarpus cyanescens plants are still used and ground together to make a pulp. The pulp is left in the sun for 2-3 days to dry. This serves as the base.
The Baule use a technique called "Ikat." It is a deeply complex process in which the threads are lined up on a loom by a weaver to form a pattern before being woven.
The full size selection offered here is a beautiful piece of genuine Baule tribe hand woven cloth! The cloth features panels that are a bit wider than found in typical Baule cloth. An off black cloth has achieved light burgundy vertical stripes sections and striped columns with tiny teal strippings. Attractive interspersed embroidered patterns of orange, white and lemon green are sewn throughout the cloth.
Older selections in general may include tiny rips in the seams, hand made repair work and staining. These are all normal characteristics of aged textiles. This selection has a 2inch place along the bottom seam where the stitching has loosened. It can be easily repaired other than that it is in good shape!
Dimensions: 70 inches long x 44 inches wide.
