Product Description

The men and women in Lega culture enter their centuries-old Bwami society to learn skills and wisdom for life. All Lega art is created and linked to Bwami practices. The Bwami society has 7 major levels for males and 4 grades for females with several degrees within each all of which can take a lifetime to master. Statues and masks are important for the ceremonies, to the individuals who created them and to the ensuing owners. These famous multi-eyed masks representing all knowing and all seeing powers were used during initiation ceremonies. Masks of this type are worn by elevated members.

Carved from a light native wood and dusted with magical white kaolin powder the mask features classic Lega multi-eyed motifs set in between 3 grooved columns that are decorated with circular markings. The figure that surmounts the top proudly represents tribal fertility.

This is another of our authentic masks that has been used in actual ceremony. This is a slightly used selection and minor signs of wear are apparent.
